Takumi

Japan will afford you a 'situation’ of living your life the way it ought to be, where you will be elevated to that which is untranslatable, where you will journey to the horizon, the very edge of English where it's structure and western ways of thinking no longer apply.  Let us walk beyond that horizon together.  Like looking into a mirror, you will see something of your possibilities in each person you meet under their cherry blossom umbrella of kindness, beauty, earnestness, and subtle gesture.     - tnm

OMOTENASHI: unique to Japan and one of its greatest national treasures. Omote means public face, the feeling image of the character of a person, nashi means nothing, honest, no hiding, no pretending, where guests feel moments are both at ease and unforgettable.  see Gladwell for more.

Takumi, 60,000 hours to become a ”world class” artisan in Japan.

This is a commercial lens with which to experience takumi. But I prefer the sentience of takumi, the way it makes me feel that has little to do with commerce and everything to do with a life well lived.

Once you experience this video, well explore takumi the way I experienced it in Japan when I met Gassan Sadatoshi, the sword maker who has gone beyond Takumi into a world beyond English words. (more coming soon)

Shokunin “The Japanese word shokunin means craftsman’ or ‘artisan,’ but there is a deeper meaning.  The apprentice is taught that shokunin means not only having technical skills, but also implies an attitude and social consciousness. … Shokunins have a social obligation to work their best for the general welfare of the people.  This obligation is both spiritual and material, no matter what it is, the shokunin’s responsibility is to fulfill the requirement.” -Tasio Odate

Shokunin is a way of life, a way of thinking, a personal characteristic that affects your every interaction in the world. Return from Japan with your own shokunin kishitsu, use these inner powers of focus and concentration and community dedication in your life back home. https://www.realtyninja.com/blog/the-mastery-of-ones-profession/
